Mo, our supervisor, relaxes in the woodland area. |
The woodland area, just outside the door of
our shop. (without a sleeping Mo....at the moment) |
Comfrey plants gone mad! They like the shady
woodland area. Some St. John's Wort is in the front. |
Some of the comfrey, leaves cut off the stem, partially drying outside. We will use these to make an herbally infused oil. |
One of our annual beds, freshly tilled and ready
for planting. Behind, honeysuckle vine (pink flower) is blooming,
sage (purple and white flowers) blooming, and our wee tiny glass greenhouse. |
Donna's foot (left) after weed-whipping, and Maggie's foot (right) after tilling (yes, I tilled barefoot). This is why it is patently obvious to us that Martha Stewart and her ilk do zero ACTUAL gardening - who the hell can get anything done in gloves, a big floppy hat, and cute little garden galoshes?!?!? |
This, folks, is what 160 cubic yards of mulch
looks like. Yes, that is a semi-load, approximately. By the end of
the summer we will have moved the bulk of this by hand, with our wheelbarrows
(and occasional help from a skid loader) onto the gardens. The recyeled
pallet hardwood mulch reduces erosion, provides weed control, and
retains soil moisture - thereby making our job far easier in the long
run (and doing wonders for soil quality, to boot). |
Lemon balm (foreground), Sage blossoms (middle), and Honeysuckle (behind). These plants are all well established, probably 3-5 years old. |
