Prairieland Herbs Events

We are delighted to announce our winter series of classes. We regularly have classes in fiber arts, and in making bath and body goodies. These classes are ever-popular, so if you're interested, please be sure to register in good time!

All classes held at Prairieland Herbs. Please sign up and prepay online. If you need to cancel your reservation once you sign up, please notify us immediately. In the event of a no-show, your card will be charged. Children 14 and up only, please!

An arm-knit cowl

Arm Knitting Class

Saturday, Feb. 25th, 1:00 – 2:30 pm.

Bring any yarn you might want to use - literally any weight or kind - and learn to make a stylish chunky cowl or scarf knitted with your arms. This technique works with many kinds of yarn, and is a great way to use up scraps or small skeins. If you don't have yarn, don't worry - we will also have plenty provided.

Learn the knitting basics from local artisan Maggie Howe of Girl With A Sword Productions! In this class you can make a washcloth or scarf (your choice). We will talk about knitting lingo - what's a skein? What are the differences between DPN's, circular needles and straight needles? Learn how to buy yarn, and the basics of reading a knitting pattern. We will learn to cast on, do the basic knit stitch, and cast off.

Saturday, Feb. 25th, 3:00 – 4:30 pm.

What to bring: a sense humor, positive attitude, a set of straight needles, and some yarn. If you'd like to knit a washcloth, please bring a ball of cotton yarn and a set of size 6 bamboo straight needles. If you'd like to knit a scarf, please bring a ball of chunky or bulky yarn and size 13 bamboo straight knitting needles. Intimidated by buying the yarn and needles? Just contact Maggie and she will take care of it for you, or talk you through it.

Rust Dyeing

Saturday, March 4th, 1:00 – 2:30 pm.

Learn to dye silk and cotton fabrics with rust. Make beautiful patterns, textures, and impressions with this simple but fascinating technique. All materials provided, but if you have a rusty jar of nails or similar items that you'd like to use or share, please feel free to bring them! You will make and take hom your own fat quarter of cotton fabric and a silk scarf.

Home Made Soaps

The soaps that we sell in our shop are made by your instructor, Sue Denny.

Soapmaking With Sue

Saturday, March 11th, 1:00 – 3:30 pm.

Learn about the history, art, magic and science of soapmaking with Sue Denny. After the lye is mixed, she'll talk about soap while the lye cools. Then the magic happens! Combine oils and lye to make soap for your own personal use. Everything is provided - just come and enjoy the process. You will take home approx. 8 oz of soap you helped make. 9 participants maximum, advance signup is required.

Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs

Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs.

Natural Easter Egg Dyeing

Saturday, March 25th, 1:00 – 2:30 pm.

Learn how to dye eggs using eco-friendly natural dyes. We will use several different dyes, and a few embellshing techniques to create a rainbow of beautifully colored all-natural Easter eggs.
Eggs and all materials will be provided, but please wear clothing that you won't mind getting messy.

Indigo Dyeing at Prairieland Herbs

Indigo is a natural dye that produces a beautiful blue color. Historically, this was highly valued, as blue dyes are rare. It is the blue associated with blue jeans.

Indigo Magic!

Sunday, March 26th, 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

This class is not a formal lecture, but is all about PLAYING. We will have an indigo vat ready to use. You bring items to dye - cotton or other natural fiber tshirts, fabric, or clothing items, yarn, fiber, buttons, basketry materials - anything you like, as much as you like. We will provide gloves, a space to get messy, and a variety of items to use if you want to scrunch, twist, tie or bind your fabric to make nifty designs. Wear clothes that can get dyed/messy.

Sample Sunday

We team up once a month with our neighbors from Picket Fence Creamery and Swede Point Creamery to bring you a wonderful afternoon of fun, samples, and family activities. Each site offers free food, beverage, or goodie samples, and often have family activities, guest vendors, or even music! Each Sample Sunday is a little different, and a lot of fun.
