Fall 2010 Classes! Saturday, August 28 – Sewing 101, 1-3 PM, $45 – Learn to sew with Sara Reid and Abby Glann! Make and take home a simple apron and set of cloth napkins. Bring your sewing machine, scisscors, measuring tape and a fabric marker. Pattern, thread and cloth supplied! This is a fun, hands on class in a relaxed setting; a great way to learn a useful new skill! It's best if students know how to thread their machine and are comfortable with sewing a straight seam. However, if you are an ABSOLUTE beginner, please let us know, we will make arrangements to meet with you before class to get you set up and started. Saturday, September 11 – Papermaking, 1-3 PM, $30 – Come learn how to use throw-away and found materials for making paper, including junk mail along with additives like flowers, seeds & even onion skins!!! You will make and take home custom paper, AND a screen so you can easily make more paper at home. All materials provided, but if you have special seeds or flowers you’d like to incorporate, feel free to bring them! Taught by Angie of AKC collectibles. View pictures of the process here: Prairieland Herbs Blog Saturday, September 18 – Pressed Flower Cards, 1-3 PM, $35 - Learn how to press flowers from your garden and create your own hand-crafted cards. Participants will create two pressed flower cards during the workshop, plus press many flowers to take home and use. Please bring one old phone directory or old book at least 1 inch thick (books need to have absorbent, not slick, pages). Sara Kadolph, textiles and dye artist. Saturday, October 2 – Hot Process Crock Pot Soapmaking, 1-3 PM, $60 - REAL handmade soap...ready to use in several hours? YES, it can be done, using this method! You will learn the technique, and make and take home your own custom-scented batch of real handmade soap! You must have taken Soapmaking 101 or have equivalent soapmaking experience. All materials provided. Taught by Karla Moore, of Heart of Iowa Soapworks. Saturday, October 9 – Make your own Mozzarella Cheese, 1-3 PM, $45 –Learn to make your own homemade mozzarella cheese, with the delightful Miss Effie!! You can do it with ingredients available in most grocery stores. Not always easy the first time .... but learn from Miss Effie's failures! We (hopefully) will send you home with 8 oz. of yummy creamy mozzarella cheese, made from Picket Fence Cream milk. We will promise you a good time and lots of laughs…and we’ll all enjoy some delicious 100% homemade pizza at the end of class! If you have any of these items, please bring them: instant read thermometer, a good size mesh strainer, 6-8 qt stock pot,a large microwaveable bowl and a slotted spoon. Saturday, October 16 – Flour Enchiladas from Scratch 10-12 AM, $45 – Flour Enchiladas from Scratch: Learn to make a basic salsa roja, flour tortillas, and meat filling (can do veggies for those who want it-just let us know ahead of time!) for enchiladas. You will come away knowing how to make your own enchiladas - start to finish without cans of sauce and bags of tortillas. You will need: a rolling pin, Measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowl, spoon, skillet. We will have one batch of enchis made (and eaten!) in class, and you will walk away with your own batch to eat later that day or stick in your freezer for later (they freeze BEAUTIFULLY!). Taught by Abby Glann. Saturday, October 16 – Pastamaking, 2-4 PM, $45 - Learn to make scrumptious home made pasta noodles and ravioli from a few simple supplies. Homemade pasta is delicious, inexpensive, easy to make, and freezes beautifully! This will be a hands on class and you will be taking noodles home to have for supper!! We will sample homemade noodles in class, and you’ll go home with loads of recipes for noodles and pasta sauces. Taught by Terri Thornton. Saturday, October 23 – DIY Gourmet Pickles, 1-3 PM, $45 – Think pickles have to be made out of cucumbers? Here are some fun and easy pickles to perk up your holiday relish tray. We will be making dilly beans, rosemary carrots and pickled mushrooms. You will be making one variety and taking home a jar of each. And of course, have recipes for everything. Home-canned goods make delightful holiday gifts too! Class taught by Cathy Lafrenz. Saturday, October 30th – Make your own Hula Hoops!, 1-3:30 PM, $50 – Learn how to make your own hula hoops AND get an invidualized hooping lesson! You will make 2 hoops, in different sizes. All materials provided! This is a FUN class! Taught by Dawn Suarez, aka “Candy Hoops”. Saturday, November 6 – Soapmaking 101, 1-3 PM, $60 - Want to learn to make cold-process soap? Karla Moore, of Heart of Iowa Soapworks, will teach the art and craft of old-fashioned soapmaking in this class. Lye safety will be emphasized. You will make and take home your own custom-scented 2 lb. batch of cold-process soap. Please note that you should wear old clothes, and that for safety reasons, the class will be strictly limited to six participants Saturday, November 13 – Intro to crocheting 10-1 PM, $35 Make a hat in time for winter with an introductory crocheting class. No experience needed. We will provide hooks, your choice of acrylic or handpainted wool yarn, markers and the pattern. Please bring a bag to keep your project in. Taught by Abby Glann. Saturday, November 13 –Natural Cosmetics 2-4 PM, $40 Hot, humid days are gone with the cold, dry wind. Are your hair and skin ready for winter? Do you need a quick, simple color pick-me-up for those early morning holiday shopping extravaganzas? How about a touch of holiday sparkle? Join us at Prairieland Herbs for an afternoon of skin and hair care 101, topped off with a simple daytime look using Lip and Cheek Gloss and a sprinkle of holiday glam with Shimmering Body Powders. You’ll go home with loads of products, and Amy will be glad to answer all your questions about natural skin care. Please bring a mirror, and if you’d like to practice makeup in class OR be a demo model, come with a “naked” face or just your mascara and foundation. Taught by Amy Miller, licensed cosmetologist and self-proclaimed natural makeup & skin care junkie! Saturday, November 20 – Soapmaking 101, 1-3 PM, $60 - Want to learn to make cold-process soap? Saturday, November 27 – Jewelry Making, DROP IN CLASS, 1-4 PM, $15 plus supplies. Want to make some beautiful jewelry for yourself, or for gifts? Tracy Barton-Rouse will be on hand with kits galore (bracelets, necklaces and more). She will help you concoct as many items as you desire, or, you can simply purchase a jewlry-making kit or kits to take home, for yourself, or for holiday gift-giving. A fun afternoon event, arrive when you like and leave when you like. Bring a friend! Saturday, December 4 – Ice cream toppings, 1-3 PM, $45 – Gift giving just got easier with this one. Who doesn't love ice cream? A gift basket of homemade toppings is a perfect addition to a gift of great local ice cream. We will make praline syrup, raspberry-chocolate ice cream topping and cinnamon apple ice cream topping. Easy simple projects that make your gifts extra special. Taught by Cathy Lafrenz. Saturday, December11 – Box-free Baked Goods, 1-3 PM, $45 – Just in time for the holiday months-learn to make a scrumptious vanilla cake and divine chocolate-fudge brownies without a box! You will need two mixing bowls, a spoon, an apron is optional, measuring cups, measuring spoons. You also want to bring either a muffin pan and liners or a large casserole pan for the cake and a smaller casserole for the brownies. Taught by Abby Glann. The fine print: We will not charge your credit or debit card until the day of the class, but we dorequest that you pre-register via phone, internet or in the store. If you are unable to attend a class you have registered for, please give us 48 hours notice, otherwise we will need to charge your card as normal. Sample Sunday Dates We team up once a month with our neighbors from Picket Fence Creamery and Northern Prairie Chevre to bring you a wonderful afternoon of fun, samples, and family activities. Each farm offers free food, beverage, or goodie samples, and often have family activities, guest vendors, or even music! Each Sample Sunday is a little different, and a lot of fun. 2010 Downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market Dates These are the dates we will be vending at the Des Moines Farmers' Market. We do not know in advance where in the market we will set up - so please browse the market until you find us! We always bring a very random selection of items from our store, so if there is something you'd particularly like us to bring, PLEASE email or call us in advance, and we will be delighted to make sure we have it for you! The farm store IS open while we are at the market, so please head out there if it is closer for you!
